The motorcycle diaries in Southeast Asia
This project captures the essence of a month-long journey across Thailand, which took place in November 2024. Traveling alongside my friend, a writer, we embarked on an adventure that began in Singapore, crossed Malaysia and led us all the way to Chiang Rai in the northernmost part of Thailand. The journey took us through every mode of transportation, from bustling trains and boats to tuk-tuks and worn-out motorbikes, immersing us in the diverse landscapes and cultures of the country.
One of the most striking moments was in Krabi, where I captured a woman and her daughter riding a motorbike, taken from the vantage point of a tuk-tuk as we sped through the streets. Another unforgettable scene was in Chiang Mai, where I photographed Buddhist monks walking along a mountain path at the Doi Kiew Lom viewpoint. Dressed only in flip-flops and light robes, they braved the chilly 0°C temperatures to continue their spiritual journey.
Our journey then led us to the remote border region between Thailand and Myanmar, where we rode over 500 km on a rickety motorbike to reach a Karen village. Known for their distinctive neck rings, the Karen women shared their unique culture and traditions with us, offering a glimpse into a way of life that has persisted for generations.
The final stop of our trip was a Chinese refugee village near Chiang Rai. These refugees had fled the oppressive regime of southern China, seeking sanctuary in Thailand. The villagers' stories of resilience and survival painted a poignant picture of human strength in the face of adversity.
Each photograph captures an authentic and intimate moment from daily life, telling the story of the people we met along the way. These images are not just about the places we visited, but about the lives that unfold within them—the quiet moments, the struggles, the joy, and the connection to the world around them.
Through this collection, I invite you to join me on this journey. These photos represent a shared experience of discovery, capturing both the personal and universal in the fleeting moments of everyday life.
